Abstract- Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) rely on the cooperation of all the participating nodes. The Cooperation requires detecting routes and forwarding packets. However, it consumes network-bandwidth, local CPU time, memory, and energy. Therefore there is a strong motivation for a node to deny packet forwarding to others and being selfish. A selfish node wants to preserve its own resources while using the services of others and consuming their resources. One way of solving this problem in a MANET is a detection and exclusion mechanism. In this paper, we concentrate on the detection phase and present a new mechanism which can be used to detect selfish nodes in MANET. Our new detection mechanism is called Packet Conservation Monitoring Algo...
